entrance of chamber

When you visit Normobaric Wellness Centre for the first time, one feature of the chamber may immediately stand out: the airlock.

Rather than simply opening a door and walking directly from the room into the main chamber, entry involves a separate enclosed space between the outside environment and the pressurized chamber.

So why is that necessary?

The simple answer is that an airlock creates a controlled transition between two environments operating at different pressures.

Without it, opening the main chamber directly to the surrounding room would allow pressure to equalize rapidly and disturb the controlled environment inside.

What Is an Airlock?

An airlock is a small enclosed compartment positioned between two areas that have different atmospheric conditions.

It normally has two doors:

Outside environment → Airlock → Main chamber

The basic rule is that both doors are not simply opened at the same time.

Instead, someone enters the airlock, one door closes, and the conditions inside the airlock can then be adjusted before the door leading into the main chamber is opened.

This same general concept is used in many types of pressurized environments.

NASA has described hyperbaric chamber designs using an airlock specifically so an attendant can enter or leave a pressurized chamber while helping preserve the chamber environment.

Why Can’t We Just Open the Main Chamber Door?

Because pressure naturally tries to equalize.

If one space is pressurized above the surrounding room and you directly connect the two, air flows toward the lower-pressure environment until the pressure difference decreases.

For a controlled chamber, that would disturb the conditions that took time to establish.

At Normobaric Wellness Centre, our chamber operates as a pressurized multi-gas environment.

Opening that environment directly to ordinary room air would affect more than simply the pressure. It can also disturb the composition and stability of the chamber atmosphere.

The airlock helps prevent that direct exchange.

The Airlock Helps Maintain Chamber Pressure

One of the airlock’s primary purposes is pressure management.

Ontario regulations governing compressed-air work environments illustrate the same fundamental engineering principle: airlocks have separate pressure controls and gauges for the airlock and the main work chamber so the pressures can be monitored independently.

The exact equipment and operating procedures differ between industrial, medical and wellness chambers, but the physics behind an airlock remains the same:

you don’t want to suddenly connect a pressurized chamber directly to normal atmospheric pressure.

Instead, the airlock provides an intermediate space where the transition can be controlled.

Think of It as a Pressure Buffer

A simple way to visualize an airlock is to think of it as a buffer zone.

Imagine three areas:

Normal room: approximately normal atmospheric pressure

Airlock: adjustable transition area

Main chamber: controlled pressurized environment

When entering, the airlock can transition from conditions closer to the outside environment toward those inside the main chamber.

When leaving, the process can occur in the opposite direction.

That controlled transition helps avoid unnecessarily disturbing the entire main chamber every time a door is used.

Why Does Pressure Need to Change Gradually?

Air-filled spaces in the human body can notice changes in surrounding pressure.

Your ears are the most familiar example.

Most people have experienced their ears popping during:

  • airplane travel;
  • driving through large elevation changes;
  • diving; or
  • other changes in atmospheric pressure.

The same basic principle applies whenever someone enters a pressurized environment.

That’s why pressure changes should be controlled rather than instantaneous.

Regulations for higher-pressure compressed-air workplaces specifically require pressure in personnel airlocks to be increased in a controlled manner while occupants are observed for discomfort.

Our wellness chamber operates differently from industrial compressed-air workplaces, but this helps illustrate why controlled pressure transitions are an important feature of pressurized chamber systems.

The Airlock Also Helps Preserve the Multi-Gas Environment

Pressure isn’t the only thing being managed inside our chamber.

Our system monitors a multi-gas environment, including:

oxygen
hydrogen
carbon dioxide

along with:

pressure
temperature
humidity

When the main chamber is operating, the goal is to maintain that controlled internal environment.

If the primary chamber were repeatedly opened directly to ordinary room air, outside air would enter and chamber air would escape.

The system would then need time to restore the intended operating environment.

An airlock helps reduce that disruption.

Why Can’t Late Guests Simply Walk In?

This is one of the practical reasons arriving on time matters.

Once a session is underway and the chamber environment has been established, entry isn’t as simple as opening an ordinary door.

Opening chamber sections and transitioning people through the system affects pressure and the internal environment.

That’s why guests should arrive before their scheduled session begins rather than expecting to enter after everyone else is already settled inside.

At Normobaric Wellness Centre, we recommend arriving approximately 15 minutes before your appointment so there is time to check in, store your belongings and prepare for chamber entry.

The Airlock Isn’t Just Another Room

From the outside, an airlock may look like a small room between two doors.

Functionally, however, it is part of the chamber’s pressure system.

Pressurized-environment regulations commonly require airlocks to have equipment capable of monitoring and controlling pressure separately from the main chamber. Ontario regulations, for example, specify pressure gauges for both the airlock and work chamber and separate controls for supplying and releasing air.

That ability to separate two environments is what makes an airlock useful.

Why Are There Two Doors?

The two-door design is essential.

If both doors were opened together, the airlock would essentially become an open hallway connecting the chamber directly to the outside room.

That would defeat its purpose.

Instead:

Door 1 closes → airlock conditions adjust → Door 2 opens.

The airlock therefore creates a temporary sealed space between the two environments.

Does an Airlock Make the Chamber Hyperbaric?

The presence of an airlock by itself does not define what type of treatment or service a chamber provides.

Airlocks are simply useful anywhere different pressure environments need to be separated.

Our chamber has been observed operating around 1.4 ATA, while conventional medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy commonly operates at higher pressures and typically involves breathing near-100% oxygen.

The Normobaric Wellness Centre system instead uses a different multi-gas wellness environment and is not positioned as a substitute for medically prescribed HBOT.

Is an Airlock Used in Medical Hyperbaric Chambers Too?

Yes, particularly in larger multiplace chamber systems.

An airlock can allow people to transition between normal atmospheric pressure and the pressurized chamber without completely depressurizing the main treatment compartment.

NASA’s hyperbaric chamber design documentation similarly describes an airlock allowing an attendant to enter or exit a pressurized patient chamber.

Smaller single-person chambers may use different designs because the entire chamber can be cycled for one occupant.

Airlock vs Single-Person Chamber

This is another reason a large shared chamber looks so different from the clear single-person tubes many people associate with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

A monoplace chamber may simply be pressurized and depressurized around one person.

A larger chamber designed for several occupants benefits from having a separate transition area.

That means the main chamber can remain its own controlled space rather than needing to be directly opened to the outside environment every time someone crosses the boundary.

Why Is Chamber Entry Scheduled?

Using a pressurized chamber requires more planning than walking into a normal wellness room.

Before a session, guests need time to:

check in
store belongings
prepare for entry
enter together
allow the chamber environment to stabilize

Once that process has begun, bringing another guest in later can interrupt the operating environment.

This is why scheduled entry times matter and why arriving early makes everyone’s experience smoother.

What Should First-Time Guests Expect?

You don’t need to understand the engineering to use the chamber.

Our staff handles the chamber operating procedures.

As a guest, the most important things are simple:

Arrive approximately 15 minutes early, follow staff instructions and let someone know if pressure changes cause discomfort.

Once inside the main chamber, you can settle into one of the seats or beds and enjoy your approximately two-hour session.

Why the Airlock Matters

The easiest way to summarize it is:

The airlock helps separate normal room conditions from the controlled pressurized environment inside the chamber.

It allows those environments to remain separated while providing a controlled transition between them.

That helps with:

  • maintaining chamber pressure;
  • limiting disruption of the internal atmosphere;
  • managing entry and exit;
  • creating a gradual pressure transition; and
  • keeping the main chamber environment more stable during operation.

It’s a relatively small part of the facility, but it plays an important role in how a pressurized chamber operates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an airlock in a wellness chamber?

An airlock is a sealed intermediate compartment between the outside room and the main pressurized chamber. It allows conditions to be adjusted before the inner chamber door is opened.

Why does the chamber need two doors?

Two doors allow the airlock to isolate the main chamber from normal room pressure. One door can remain closed while conditions inside the airlock are adjusted.

Why can’t the chamber door simply stay open?

Leaving the main chamber open would allow pressure to equalize with the outside room and disrupt the controlled chamber environment.

Can someone enter once a session has already started?

Entry into a pressurized chamber involves more than opening an ordinary door. Because pressure and chamber conditions need to be maintained, guests should arrive before their scheduled session begins.

Why should I arrive 15 minutes early?

Arriving early gives you enough time to check in, store your belongings and prepare for chamber entry without delaying the scheduled session.

Will I feel the pressure change?

Some people may notice pressure changes in their ears, similar to what can happen during changes in altitude. Guests should follow staff instructions and communicate if they experience discomfort.

Is an airlock only used in oxygen chambers?

No. Airlocks are used in many situations where two environments with different pressure or atmospheric conditions need to remain separated.

Does your airlock contain oxygen?

The airlock is part of the chamber system, but its exact conditions vary during the entry and exit process. Guests should rely on the chamber’s operating procedures rather than assuming the airlock always has the same conditions as the main chamber.
