What Is a Multi-Gas Wellness Chamber? Oxygen, Hydrogen & Carbon Dioxide Explained

When most people hear the words oxygen therapy, they imagine one thing: oxygen.

Maybe it is delivered through a nasal tube. Maybe through a mask. Maybe inside a medical hyperbaric chamber.

The environment at Normobaric Wellness Centre is different.

Our multi-gas wellness chamber does not monitor oxygen alone. The chamber’s control system continuously displays three different gases:

Oxygen (O₂)
Hydrogen (H₂)
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)

It also monitors pressure, temperature and humidity.

That creates a very different environment from simply sitting beside an oxygen concentrator or breathing nearly 100% oxygen during conventional medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

So what exactly is a multi-gas chamber—and why are these three gases worth understanding?

What Is a Multi-Gas Wellness Chamber?

A multi-gas wellness chamber is a controlled enclosed environment in which several aspects of the chamber atmosphere can be monitored rather than focusing on a single gas.

At Normobaric Wellness Centre, guests enter a large shared chamber with multiple seats and beds.

There is no individual oxygen mask or nasal cannula.

Instead, guests breathe the surrounding chamber atmosphere while the system monitors:

  • oxygen;
  • hydrogen;
  • carbon dioxide;
  • chamber pressure;
  • temperature; and
  • humidity.

This makes the experience fundamentally different from an oxygen bar, an individual oxygen mask or conventional medical HBOT.

What Does Our Chamber Actually Monitor?

Oxygen: 40.2%
Hydrogen: 0.75%
Carbon dioxide: approximately 2.7–2.8%
Absolute pressure: approximately 1,400 hPa

The pressure corresponds to roughly 1.4 atmospheres absolute, or 1.4 ATA.

These numbers are best understood as a snapshot of the chamber during operation, rather than a promise that every session will display precisely the same numbers at every moment.

The important feature is the system’s ability to monitor the overall chamber environment.

Gas #1: Oxygen

Oxygen is obviously the most familiar of the three gases.

Normal outdoor air contains approximately 21% oxygen.

The chamber display we have observed has shown oxygen at approximately 40%, meaning the atmosphere inside the chamber is oxygen-enriched compared with ordinary air.

However, that is still very different from conventional medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Medical HBOT generally involves breathing near-100% oxygen under substantially elevated pressure. Depending on the chamber, that oxygen may be delivered through the atmosphere of a monoplace chamber or through a specialized mask or hood in a larger multiplace chamber.

Our multi-gas wellness chamber is not designed around near-100% oxygen exposure.

Why Oxygen Concentration Matters

The amount of oxygen in an environment matters just as much as the fact that oxygen is present.

There is a major difference between:

21% oxygen in normal air

and

an oxygen-enriched chamber environment

and

near-100% oxygen used during medical HBOT.

These should not be presented as interchangeable exposures.

It’s also worth understanding that more oxygen does not automatically mean better.

Oxygen concentration, atmospheric pressure, exposure duration and individual health all matter.

That is why medically prescribed oxygen treatments should remain under appropriate healthcare supervision.

Oxygen-Enriched Environments Require Careful Control

From a safety perspective, oxygen enrichment is important.

OSHA defines an atmosphere containing more than 23.5% oxygen as oxygen-enriched. Higher oxygen concentrations can make combustible materials ignite more easily and burn more intensely.

That is one reason controlled chamber environments need appropriate equipment, operating procedures and restrictions regarding what can enter the chamber.

The goal isn’t simply to increase oxygen without limits. The chamber environment needs to be monitored and controlled.

Gas #2: Molecular Hydrogen

The second gas displayed by our system is molecular hydrogen, or H₂.

Hydrogen is receiving considerable scientific attention.

Researchers have investigated inhaled molecular hydrogen for potential biological effects involving oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular processes.

But this is an area where we want to be especially precise.

A recent 2026 review of molecular hydrogen research described the existing clinical findings as encouraging while also noting important limitations, including small studies, inconsistent methodologies and a lack of standardized validated commercial delivery systems.

In other words:

Hydrogen research is interesting—but it is still developing.

We don’t need to pretend the science is more settled than it actually is.

Has Hydrogen Been Studied in Humans?

Yes.

Molecular hydrogen has been studied in human clinical research using several delivery methods.

One small hospital-based safety study exposed eight healthy adults to 2.4% hydrogen in medical air for periods ranging from 24 to 72 hours. Researchers reported no clinically significant adverse effects in those participants, while emphasizing that larger studies are still needed.

A broader 2023 review identified dozens of human studies and clinical trials involving molecular hydrogen but also highlighted issues such as variation in treatment methods and the need for further research.

That makes hydrogen a fascinating component of ongoing medical-gas research—but not something we should advertise as a proven cure or treatment for disease.

Gas #3: Carbon Dioxide

This is probably the gas that surprises visitors the most.

People often think of carbon dioxide only as a gas we breathe out.

But CO₂ is also an important part of normal human respiratory physiology.

The body continuously produces carbon dioxide during metabolism and eliminates it through the lungs.

CO₂ is involved in:

respiratory drive
blood pH regulation
oxygen transport physiology

Under normal conditions, rising carbon dioxide is actually one of the body’s most important signals for adjusting breathing. Central chemoreceptors in the brain respond strongly to changes associated with arterial carbon dioxide levels.

Does That Mean More Carbon Dioxide Is Automatically Beneficial?

No.

And this distinction is extremely important.

The fact that carbon dioxide has an essential physiological role does not mean increasing environmental CO₂ should automatically be considered beneficial.

Human studies show that increasing inspired CO₂ affects ventilation, arterial carbon dioxide and blood pH even at relatively low concentrations.

Occupational guidelines also treat elevated carbon dioxide seriously. NIOSH recommends an 8-hour exposure limit of 5,000 ppm (0.5%) and a short-term exposure limit of 30,000 ppm (3%).

For that reason, we would not describe carbon dioxide itself as a proven wellness treatment.

Its concentration is something the chamber system monitors as part of the overall controlled environment.

Why Monitor All Three Gases?

This is really the key to understanding the chamber.

Instead of looking at oxygen concentration in isolation, the control system provides information about the composition of the chamber atmosphere.

That means operators can see what is happening with:

O₂
H₂
CO₂

alongside environmental variables such as:

pressure
temperature
humidity

This is what makes the term multi-gas chamber useful.

The system is monitoring an atmosphere rather than simply sending oxygen through a tube.

Pressure Is Part of the Environment Too

Gas concentration is only part of the story.

The chamber is also pressurized.

Our control panel has displayed approximately 1,400 hPa absolute pressure, corresponding to roughly 1.4 ATA.

Normal sea-level atmospheric pressure is approximately 1 ATA.

That means our chamber operates above ordinary atmospheric pressure but substantially below the 2–3 ATA commonly associated with conventional medical HBOT.

Pressure matters because gas concentration and pressure together determine the partial pressure of individual gases.

So simply comparing oxygen percentages between two systems does not tell the entire story.

A Multi-Gas Chamber Is Not the Same as an Oxygen Bar

An oxygen bar typically provides supplemental oxygen through a nasal cannula while the customer remains in a normal room.

A multi-gas chamber is very different.

At Normobaric Wellness Centre:

you enter the controlled environment itself.

There is no nasal tube attached to your face.

There is no individual oxygen mask.

The chamber atmosphere, gas concentrations and pressure are monitored while several guests can sit or lie inside together.

It Is Also Different From Conventional Medical HBOT

Medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy is another separate category.

Traditional HBOT typically combines:

near-100% oxygen
significantly increased atmospheric pressure
medical supervision
treatment protocols for specific medical conditions

Our multi-gas wellness chamber instead involves a monitored atmosphere containing oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide at a substantially lower operating pressure than typical medical HBOT.

No Mask and No Single-Person “Tube”

The physical experience is another major difference.

Many medical hyperbaric facilities use monoplace chambers, where one patient lies inside a narrow transparent chamber.

Other medical facilities have larger multiplace chambers but deliver oxygen through masks or hoods.

You don’t have to:

  • wear an oxygen mask;
  • use a nasal cannula;
  • wear an oxygen hood; or
  • lie alone inside a narrow transparent chamber.

Instead, you simply breathe the controlled surrounding environment.

Why Is the Session Two Hours?

Our standard chamber sessions are approximately two hours.

Once guests enter, they can sit or lie comfortably, relax, breathe normally and spend time away from everyday distractions.

There is no requirement to spend two hours performing breathing exercises.

Some guests choose to focus on relaxed nasal breathing or simple breathing techniques, while others simply rest.

Is the Three-Gas Combination a Proven Medical Treatment?

No—and this is an important distinction.

There is scientific research examining oxygen, molecular hydrogen and carbon dioxide individually in different contexts.

That does not mean that the specific combination used inside a commercial wellness chamber has been established as a medical treatment for disease.

Molecular hydrogen research in particular remains an evolving field, with recent reviews noting promising findings alongside limitations in standardization and clinical evidence.

We therefore describe our service as a wellness chamber experience, not as a substitute for medical care.

Why Transparency About the Chamber Matters

There is a lot of confusing oxygen-related marketing online.

Terms like:

oxygen therapy
hyperbaric
normobaric
oxygen bar
hydrogen therapy

are often used interchangeably even though they can describe completely different environments.
