How to Get the Most Out of Your 2-Hour Oxygen Therapy Session

A 2-hour oxygen therapy session at Normobaric Wellness Centre gives you an opportunity to step away from everyday distractions, relax and spend time in our unique normobaric chamber environment.

Our chamber operates at approximately 1,400 hPa in a controlled multi-gas environment. During your session, the goal is simple: get comfortable, unplug from outside distractions and allow yourself time to relax.

While there is nothing complicated you need to do during your visit, following a few simple guidelines can help make your experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

What to Expect During Your 2-Hour Oxygen Therapy Session

Before entering the chamber, our team will help you get settled and explain what to expect.

Because sessions take place in a shared environment, we aim to keep the chamber quiet, comfortable and free from unnecessary distractions.

Once inside, you can sit or lie down, relax and focus on your breathing. There are no masks required during the session.

You do not need to perform any special exercises or breathing routines. However, some guests enjoy using simple breathing techniques as a way to relax and stay focused during the two-hour period.

Chamber Rules for a Comfortable Session

A few basic chamber rules help us maintain a comfortable environment for everyone.

Leave Devices Outside the Chamber

Phones, tablets and other electronic devices or outside materials should be left in your designated locker before entering.

This gives you an opportunity to disconnect from notifications, messages and other distractions during your session.

No Food or Drinks

Food and drinks are not permitted inside the chamber.

This helps us maintain a clean environment and is especially important because guests may have food allergies or sensitivities.

Keep the Chamber Quiet

We ask guests not to talk during the session.

Everyone uses their two hours differently, and maintaining a quiet atmosphere allows each person to relax without being disturbed.

Focus on Comfortable Nasal Breathing

One simple way to settle into your 2-hour oxygen therapy session is to focus on breathing gently through your nose.

Nasal breathing is a normal part of the body’s respiratory process and can encourage a slower, more controlled breathing pattern.

There is no need to take unusually deep breaths or force your breathing.

Instead, try to:

  • breathe comfortably through your nose;
  • keep your breathing slow and relaxed;
  • avoid forcing large breaths; and
  • return to normal breathing whenever necessary.

The idea is not to turn your session into a breathing workout. Your breathing should remain comfortable throughout the visit.

Try Box Breathing During Your Session

If you find yourself restless or simply want something to focus on, you can try a simple technique known as box breathing.

The technique uses four equal stages, similar to tracing the four sides of a square.

How to Practise Box Breathing

Step 1: Slowly inhale through your nose for four seconds.

Step 2: Gently hold your breath for four seconds.

Step 3: Slowly exhale through your nose for four seconds.

Step 4: Pause for four seconds before beginning again.

You can repeat the cycle whenever you feel comfortable.

The four-second timing is only a guideline. You should never force yourself to hold your breath longer than feels comfortable.

If you become uncomfortable, light-headed or short of breath, simply stop the exercise and return to your normal breathing pattern.

You Don’t Need to Spend Two Hours Doing Breathing Exercises

Box breathing can be useful, but it is completely optional.

You do not need to spend the entire session counting your breaths.

Many guests simply use their session as an opportunity to:

  • relax;
  • close their eyes;
  • practise quiet breathing;
  • reflect;
  • rest; or
  • enjoy time away from their phone and everyday responsibilities.

There is no single “correct” way to spend your session.

The most important thing is that you remain comfortable and follow the chamber guidelines.

Arrive Early for Your Appointment

We recommend arriving approximately 15 minutes before your scheduled session.

Our chamber operates on scheduled entry periods. Arriving early gives you enough time to check in, store your belongings and prepare before the chamber is ready to begin the session.

Once a session has started and the chamber environment has been established, entry may no longer be possible.

Planning to arrive a little early helps prevent you from missing your scheduled appointment.

What Should You Wear?

Comfortable clothing is usually the best option for a two-hour session.

Since you will be sitting or relaxing for an extended period, choose clothing that allows you to remain comfortable throughout your visit.

You can learn more in our guide to what to wear during an oxygen therapy session.

Take the Opportunity to Completely Unplug

For many people, two uninterrupted hours without their phone is unusual.

Between work, messages, social media and everyday responsibilities, there are not many opportunities to simply sit quietly without being interrupted.

Your session can be an opportunity to temporarily disconnect from those distractions.

You can use that time to focus on your breathing, relax or simply enjoy a quieter environment.
